Serving Children from Norwalk and Stamford

Challenge

The Challenge – Fairfield County has one of the largest opportunity gaps in the nation.

  • Under-served students are six times more likely to drop out of high school and fewer than one third of them will enroll in college.
  • Under-resourced students who do not have access to summer educational opportunities lose 2-3 months of academic ground during the summer months.
  • Many under-resourced students are three grades behind by fifth grade.
  • Nearly 65% of Black and 45% of Hispanic/Latino children do not know how to swim.
  • 80% of under-served Connecticut high school seniors graduate from high school in four years.
  • Only 51% of economically disadvantaged Connecticut high school graduates enroll in college.
  • In 2023, 100% of Horizons seniors graduated from high school and 93% were enrolled in college or post-secondary programs in the fall.

This lack of educational attainment has a profound impact on these students’ career trajectories and lifetime earnings. Horizons is changing the odds for our students by providing them with the resources and opportunities they need to succeed in school, college and career.
